It’s time to recharge those goals that we’ve let slip since January. Whether your goal was to eat cleaner, bike to work daily, or get eight hours sleep every night, it’s time to get back to it.
Here are some ways to kickstart your goals:
Know Thyself. Write a letter to yourself explaining how you’re feeling, where you’re at, and where you want to be. How do you envision your future? What are hurdles that you know you will face and how will you conquer them? Write in detail what that future will be like and step into it. How does it feel to be that other version of yourself? What have you gained? What would you tell your current self? Place this letter in an envelope and re-read it whenever you need to be reminded about why your goals are important to you.
Build a Pyramid. Now it’s time to define your goals even more. Write down why this goal is important to you. What will it provide for your future self? What is the exact goal that you’re going to accomplish and when will it happen? Next, make a general list of how you’re going to make this goal happen.
Get S.M.A.R.T. Here’s where the rubber meets the road. Note your overall goal and the timeframe for accomplishing it. Next, break out the steps to reach this goal into monthly, weekly, and daily goals. How will you schedule these steps into your day? Will you have to learn new skills to accomplish your goal? Will achieving this goal negatively or positively affect the relationships around you? These are all things to consider as you break down your goal into sizeable chunks. Consider printing them out and placing them where you see them every day.
It can be easy to lose motivation to achieve our goals when we set unrealistic expectations or don’t break up the large goals into smaller ones that can be celebrated. Remember to lean on those closest to you for support and even consider starting an accountability group of like-minded people to keep each other on track.
